Dog Wellness Care:

Let’s Keep Those Tails Wagging

Once your puppy has reached adulthood, the fun really begins. There are so many different activities you can do with your dog—from walking in the neighborhood or playing in a park, to taking a Canine Good Citizen course or trying out an agility class. Even if it’s simply cuddling up in front of the TV, your dog is just happy to be there with you!

In order to ensure that your faithful friend remains healthy, our veterinarians and staff will work with you to provide appropriate pet wellness care. By taking the proper steps now, you will protect your dog from potential pet health conditions down the road, especially once he or she becomes a senior pet.

Dog Wellness Exams

Your dog should have a comprehensive physical exam each year. If possible, it is helpful to bring in a small stool sample on the day of the appointment.

Prior to the exam, you will be asked to fill out a dog symptoms checklist so that our veterinarians will be aware of any dog health issues or concerns that may have arisen since your last appointment. By communicating these changes to our veterinarians, we will be able to examine potential issues more closely and identify their underlying causes.

During the wellness appointment, our veterinarians will perform a complete nose-to-tail physical. Your dog’s eyes, nose, teeth, ears, skin, fur, paws, limbs, and joints will be examined to ensure they are healthy.

We also will conduct fecal and blood tests in order to ensure that your dog is free of internal parasites, including heartworms. Additional blood work will be done to check your dog’s organ function, including the liver and kidneys.

Preventive Care Measures

In order to keep your dog healthy, our veterinarians will take this opportunity to speak with you about preventive care measures we can take together to protect your pet. These include:

Heartworm, flea, and tick control—Due to the Northern Virginia climate, dogs should be protected from these potentially deadly parasites year round. We will be happy to help you determine which of the many products available will best suit your pet.

Pet vaccinations—During the wellness exam, our veterinarians will be sure that your canine is current on his or her core dog vaccines. These include rabies and distemper. In our region, it’s also highly recommended that dogs receive the Lyme disease vaccine. In addition, our veterinarians will discuss your dog’s activities and lifestyle to determine whether he or she is in need of other dog vaccinations, such as bordetella and canine flu.

Dog dental care—Since oral disease is prevalent among dogs, we will carefully examine your dog’s teeth, gums, and oral cavity. If a dog teeth cleaning is required, our experienced veterinary staff will be glad to provide this service. We are now offering dental surface cleaning without anesthesia for routine maintenance care! Learn more about this service here. Our veterinarians also will discuss preventive measures you can take at home, such as brushing your dog’s teeth and using dental chews.

Pet nutrition counseling—We know how good dogs can be at obtaining extra goodies from their owners. However, too much of a good thing can lead to a myriad of pet health disorders. Our veterinarians will examine your dog’s weight and overall physical condition to ensure that he or she is healthy. In addition, we will be happy to discuss your canine’s evolving nutritional needs and the dog foods that will best fulfill them.

Spay and neuter services—If you do not plan to breed your dog, there are many health benefits that come from having him or her fixed. At Columbia Pike Animal Hospital, we provide low-cost spay and neuter services while offering only the highest quality of veterinary surgical care.

Microchips—This remarkable form of permanent identification is about the size of a grain of rice, and it’s one of the best ways to ensure that your dog will find his or her way home to you. Ask us about this quick and simple procedure.

Thank you for entrusting us with your dog’s veterinary care. We will do everything we can to ensure a lifetime of health and happiness for your pet!

I have been bringing my pets to CPAH since I was a little girl living in Sleepy Hollow Woods with my parents. Dr Hall and his colleagues and staff have always been top notch—the standard to which experiences elsewhere can be compared.
